This post gives a list of defensive upgrades that I consider significant, which means that, in a 1v1 situation, it changes the number of full attacks needed either either kill a specific troop or be fully destroyed. Note that after finishing with gold upgrades for OTTO, your priority beyond all else is rushing lvl7 Guard Post to unlock five defending troops.
